HERBAL COMPRESS
“Luk Pra Kob”

Compresses contain a combination of traditional herbs, wrapped in bundles. The bundles are heated with steam to release the beneficial alkaloids in the herbs. The warm bundles are then applied to the skin directly or through clothing. Compresses are used to relieve sprains, strains on muscle tendons, stiffness in joints and general inflammation. Herbal compresses can also be used to aid in the circulation of blood. Herbal compresses can be used in addition to other massage modalities.

In Thai massage there are two types of herbal compresses, each with a different function and use.

Hot Compress

Therapist use herbal compresses on the joints in order to soften tissue and loosen the connections between bones and increase mobility before deep stretching. Also, use of the compresses on the abdomen can encourage digestion and stimulate the organs.

According to traditional Thai energetics, hot temperatures increase energy flow, improve circulation, relax muscles and stimulate nerves.

The aroma therapeutic effects of the herbs used in the hot compresses should not be undervalued. Many of these herbs have a balancing effect on the mind and spirit, and provide clients with a soothing reduction of stress. All of the herbs also possess properties which clear out congestion the lungs and sinuses. Application of the hot compresses the chest and throat can be a wonderfully to kick a cold.

Cold Compress

Cold compresses or “herbal ice packs” should be cooked for 10-15 minutes to release the beneficial alkaloids in the herbs, and then frozen or iced. The cold compresses should then be applied to clients with muscle strains, tendon or ligament sprains, contusions, hematoma, and more severe injuries requiring “cold therapy”.

Cold compresses help to reduce swelling and pain and can promote dissipation of pooled stagnant energy due to broken Sen Lines. Cold compresses should be applied only to the site of injury usually 24-48 hours after injury occurs.
